I don't know what it is with humans. But when it comes to money, we act pretty much brain-dead. Surely you could point out at least 5 people you know right now, who've made really stupid decisions because they wanted to get rich quick.

And that's not even counting the anonymous hordes who secretly buy lottery tickets each months...

My dear friend Lisa was no exception...

We became good friends after an e-mail she sent me last fall. I didn't know Lisa at all at the time, but as it happened she was subscribed to my newsletter.

I had to learn more about Lisa. I wrote straight back and asked if I could interview her. She agreed. We set a date and on November 2nd I dialed her number - eager to learn more about Lisa's sudden success.

Lisa is probably the wittiest person I ever had the pleasure to interview. We were on the phone for almost 3 hours and she'd have me rolling over the floor with laughter every other minute.

Like when she told me about her first attempt to get her website live...

"It went kind of blank on the other side. Finally after a few minutes, I just say, 'Well, I will have to cancel my account if you can't help me.'

Then I frustratedly signed up to another host. They had the same problem! They couldn't get my pages onto the net either! Kept talking about they were just the host and I had to ftp something. So I cancelled them too.

Finally discovered Site Build It - that it was the easiest way to put a site up - and signed on.

I'll bet I read their 600 page manual 15 or more times. Most days all I could digest was a dozen pages. Then I'd have to re-read them three or four times before attempting the next step.

You can't get more newbie than I was..."

The Long Dark Overnight Success...

Well, newbie or not, when you make $38.000 in less than 3 weeks - who cares if you can upload a website or not? I don't know about you, but I'd trade my html skills any day to have the kind of success Lisa experienced. Or so I thought...

"So, how does it feel to make it big overnight?"

After a thoughtful silence she answered...

"It feels great I guess - especially after a night which lasted 2,5 years..."

Hold on. Did she really say two and a half years?

"Oh yes. And time was not the only thing I sacrificed to get where I am now..."

A 'self-proclaimed pre-embryonic newbie' (her words), Lisa went on to spend over $50,000 on learning Internet marketing - from DVDs to courses galore.

After spending about $3000 on learning eBay, she had 288 pairs of pants and lots of other items that she bought from a liquidator stacked high to the ceiling.

"You could barely get from one room to the next. I have pictures to prove it. They're buried where no one will ever find them!!"

In my mind's eye I could just see this cheerful woman from the south trying to fix herself a meal. But having to wear a helmet while cooking as each time she'd open one of her kitchen cupboards - pants, t-shirts, kid's toys, books and what-not would attack her by jumping down the over-stuffed shelves...

Okay - my imagination can take a run with me at times...

But she did unplug her freezer at some point and stuffed eBay items in there when space ran out!

"So, did you sell any of this liquidator stock on eBay at all?"

"I wish! Nope. When the day came I had to take a running jump to reach my bed I decided I had enough of eBay. So I cleared the house and moved on to the next venture."

Enter the Internet Gurus...

I don't want to bore you with too many details of what happened next. Suffice to say that Lisa got herself completely burried in a huge stack of eBooks, courses, audios, DVDs and special reports about online marketing.

Guru X would advise her to focus on Google Adwords.

Guru Y would tell her 'Not Adwords, listbuilding is the key.'

'No, no, no!' came guru Z. 'The trick is to get high search engine ranking.'

Rich and Filthy

"So, did you throw a big party to celebrate your success?"

"Goodness no - there's no way I can have any people visit my home right now!"

They say that when success finally comes, it comes in by waves.

"I have been getting so many orders, I don't have time to take out the trash, wash my clothes or some days even get a shower. As a matter of fact I currently have 7 bags of garbage stacked on the kitchen floor..."

"Lisa, that is disgusting!" I exclaimed. "You're not getting filthy rich. You are getting rich and filthy..."

Then we both started laughing. "I guess that's the price I have to pay."

"Well, I think you paid a lot more than that. But tell me now, how did you do it?"

As it turns out, Lisa really didn't have a clue...

"I know you want me to come up with a cut-and-paste method for your subscribers to copy. But truth be known, I honestly believe I struck gold by accident."

I admit I was really disappointed with her answer...

"Are you sure you're not with-holding some juicy secret? Surely there must be a key to your victory? If anyone wants to achieve what you achieved, what would you tell them?"

"Never give up," she advises. "If you keep moving ahead, even a pre-embryonic baby step at a time, you'll make it."

"I probably spent way too much time learning the ropes, but I knew this 'being your own boss' wasn't something I could back out on. I had quit my job and spent my retirement. The bridges were burned, and I had to succeed. There was no turning back..."

And so she did...

Being 31 pages in print it was a good example of how a sales letter can never be too long, only too boring. This one gets you sucked into the story straight away and you cannot help reading it all the way to the end.

At the seminar we were hanging on Mark’s lips as he read his “Wife Caught Cheating” sales letter to us. The heart-breaking story about Mark's friend Paul who suspected his wife of cheating on him; how he got proof using a common household object and the secret key which turned this devastating situation into his advantage.

Mark would stop reading every other paragraph to point out some interesting facts about the use of bullet points and sub headlines in ad copy.

And every once in a while he'd say, “Hey guys, this is a really long letter. Are you sure you want me to continue reading?”

To which everybody is just nodding yes. Some were even so aggravated with the suspense, they shouted, “Will you get on with it please!”

We were so mesmerized by the sales letter that we were barely paying attention to the teachings that Mark would throw in as he was reading.

But did Mark release the tension? Not for a second.

Have you ever wanted to know something so bad that you could feel tension in every cell of your body?

That is the exact same effect that Mark had on every person in the room. And I mean everyone. It was pure torture…

The Zeigarnik Effect

The experience of hearing Mark read the sales letter out loud was probably a lot stronger than if you read the letter yourself online. But either way, you would have felt the itch. That burning desire to know the answers to the questions raised in that letter...

• Whom did Paul's wife run of with?
• How did he catch her?
• What was that common household object he used to get his proof?
• What's the secret key to dealing with adverseries?
• And how did his life change after he used this?

But you don't just drop these questions to answer them straight away...

No, you cleverly weave suspense into your letters. Give a little promise here, a small clue there and build on the expectation that if only you continue reading, you're going to find out...

Mark calls this 'Zeigarnik Effect'. A very powerful technique to make sure your sales letters are being read from start to finish...

The story about Paul and his monstrous wife actually only covered about one third of the letter.

Mark continues with giving some valuable instructions for selling information products online. These 11 pages alone could have been sold as a special report. They provide you with a vital road-map which points out the first steps on your way to being successful.

This is just a simple example of using the Zeigarnik Effect.

It wasn't used by Mark in this part of the sales letter. He actually gave very explicit instructions on how to get started with selling information products. The does and donts that all successful marketers know, but which are dark secrets to most people starting online...

So the sales letter in itself already gave you a great opportunity to learn something from a person who really knows what he's talking about.

And Mark didn't stop here...

The 5 Tele-Seminars...

He next conducted a series of 5 free tele-classes...

When a call starts at 9:00 pm EST to me this means I have to be up at 3:00 am to attend. Living in the Netherlands and being the mom of 4 young sons, I simply cannot afford losing too much sleep.   Next she learned how to write sales letters. And when she felt confident enough, she wrote a sales letter for her Instant Niche Emails. One which was actually converting at 13%...



• Step 3 - Create a Delivery Mechanism
  She then used everything she had learned about websites when she just started out to create a fully automated delivery mechanism - an internet based method of getting the goods in the hands of your customers.



• Step 4 - Bring People to Your Message
