Affiliate Presents? Bad Idea!

If you have registered yourself as an affiliate for Thin Electrons you will know that I offer my affiliates and partners some extras that aren’t available to regular members of the site.
Recently I received an email from one of my affiliates advicing me to advertise the extras as a means to get more people to promote Thin Electrons.
No go!
As a matter of fact I even considered making the affiliate program by invitation only…
Why is that?
Well, I personally don’t think Thin Electrons is going to be promoted more widely because the affiliate gets an extra present. The only effect it will have if I promote the pressies is that I’ll soon have a huge group of non-productive affiliates…
Think about it. Why would you promote a product?
- Because you got a present when you signed up?
- Because you earn commissions with every successful referral?
- Because you think it’s a great product that others could benefit from?
My guess is that if you are any serious about being an affiliate, those last 2 points are important to you. Receiving a gift is just a nice extra.
Affiliate marketing is a business. Not a hobby for collecting freebies…
Personally I think that promoting something you believe in is even more important than the commissions you earn. I once made the mistake of promoting an immature software which - though I did purchase it myself - I hadn’t tried out yet before spreading the word.
That was severely damaging to my reputation!
I was lucky in the sense that I didn’t have much of a list. But I bet that those who were on it at the time and bought this junk on my recommendation didn’t consider my recommendations worth their time and money for a long time to come.
It’s really hard work to earn trust on the internet.
It’s extremely easy to loose that trust…
Earning an income as an affiliate can mean big bucks when you take your profession seriously. It’s just another way to manifest money out of thin electrons and it has many advantages.
You’re most welcome to join the Thin Electrons affiliate program if you genuinely believe in the product. Just do me one favor. Don’t sign up because of the presents…
